Tomato Sauce

Yesterday, I adapted a sauce from Contadina's Italian Herb Meat Sauce. The main changes were that used my own herbs and replace the beef with Italian sausage instead. It came out well.

Qualitative Research Methods

In my recent class, I learned five different qualitative research methods: 1) Case study, a specific study of a something, someone, or group 2) Ethnography, a study of specific group, culture or subculture, Phenomenology, a study of an individual, group, or concept focused on an experiential understanding, Grounded Theory, see here for the definition as this site claims to be both quantitative and qualitative, and Biography/Narrative, a study of an individual.

On a side note, I've always wanted to do an ethnographic study on hockey fans.

Biblical Commentaries

Logos Bible Software has a last chance pre-pub sale for the Anchor Yale Bible commentary set. I was tempted to purchase it, however, looking at the price, it is about the same as it would cost for my van to get repaired, which will most likely happen soon. Nevertheless, Anchor Yale commentaries are the best out there, along with ICC, Hermeneia, NIGTC, WBC and NICNT (which isn't available on Logos yet). I also happen to like Crossway Classic Commentary Series and Classic Commentaries on the Greek New Testament.

Fortunately, Logos does allow people purchase one commentary at a time, see example with searching Matthew, which the will likely do with Anchor Yale Bible after its published. Yet it is cheaper to purchase the set in the long run.

A new feature for Logos is their Product Guide to Multi-Volume Commentaries page - similar to the CBD's product guide. The page explains who the commentaries are geared to. They can geared to scholars, pastors or laypeople, and appear to be accurate on their assessment.

Blogs and Qualitative Study

Yesterday, I learned about the four different ways to collect information for a qualitative study. One form is observation. Second is interviewing individuals or groups. Third is describing personal experience, and fourth is retrieving archival data, e.g. documents, and audio/visual material. It's cool that blogs are included. So if anyone wanted to do a qualitative study on how foreigners feel about living in Korea, the person can look at my entries tagged Korea.

Super Bowl XLIII

This year it's the historical Steelers and old, forgotton Cardinals. Though I thought that the Cardinals were going to, it was one of the more exciting football games I have seen. I tip my hat to the Steelers for the organzation has won their sixth Super Bowl.

As for the commercials, it seemed that not many companies paid for the spots due to economy, as there were quite a few of movie trailers, such as G.I. Joe, and television ads.

Obama is allowing the America to help fund international abortions. Historically, "Ronald Reagan first introduced the ban in 1984; Bill Clinton overturned it in 1993; George Bush re-instated it in 2001. Now, Mr. Obama has declared a culture war right from the outset of his presidency" (source: Washington Times). Since I'm for pro-life, I am displeased with this decision.

FYI: Norma McCorvey, who was Jane Roe in the Roe vs. Wade case, later in life became a Christian and Pro-Life - unfortunately, I haven't yet read her book, Won by Love.

Consequences in Drinking Coffee

Recently, the media questioned if coffee can cause hallucinations. According the Scientific American, the researchers themselves questioned the accuracy of the results, (go here for the article).

Though the results of hallucinations is problematic, helping people ward off dementia isn't. WebMD reports that moderate coffee drinking can reduce risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s by 65%.

Violence and Sex in American Media

Recently, I read Understanding Evangelical Media: The Changing Face of Christian Communication. In it I ran into this sidebar essay about violence and sex. Kevin Miller thinks it's okay to watch it. Here's part of the quote:

Imagine Mel Gibson producing The Passion of David and Bathsheba with the same graphic detail he put into The Passion of the Christ. Instead of Jesus dripping sweat and groaning under the whip, King David would be perspiring and moaning as he caresses Bathsheba. Would evangelical Christians support that kind of passion? Probably not. Graphic sexuality is taboo among most American evangelicals, while British evangelicals are more troubled by graphic violence, including the hardcore brutality in Gibson's Passion. Who's right?...So should Christians encores cinematic depictions of violence or sex? I say yes to both, but only when they're cast in the full context of their consequences. Otherwise the violence or sex becomes merely entertainment.

I disagree with Kevin Miller. I'd prefer to avoid content, though it seems impossible to do in American 21st century media. I understand that Christians shouldn't put their heads in the sand. Rather, interact with the world. Yet, it seems that Christians watch shows to be entertained, instead of critically thinking about the movie or television show. My hope is that if Christians watch violent or sexual movies or television shows, they do it in a way that pleases God. My question is how can that be done?

Thankfulness

Thankfulness can be rewarding. This should be quite obvious. But it isn't read this article. Furthermore, a collegue of mine explained that Rabbis tell people to keep 100 blessings in mind. I admit it was hard to do at first, as it took a few weeks to do. Yet in time, I did it. By doing this exercise, I began to relize how many people have been influential - and not things - in my life. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

What Not to Do in an Interview

As times are difficult with economy and employment, here are eight bad things to say in an interview by Career Builder. Unfortunately, I have broken at least 2: "I don't know anything about the company", 3: "No, I don't have any questions for you", and 4: "I'm going to need to take these days off" from the list. As for the #2, it seems the best to know most about the company, something, I had never thought about to do. For #3, asking questions is beneficial, as a person is thinking about the job, and to see if it is a good match for them. On #4, I have had to do this, yet it has been during negotiating stage, as the article explains. If it is done any sooner, it is premature.

I have found WebMD to be a helpful site in learning about the body and mind. Though it isn't written daily, it is one of the more interesting blogs to read is Men's Health Office by Dr. Marks. They also have interesting arcticles such as the history of medical treatments, and on family and couple issues.
